Arden

Page history last edited by Dan McGirt 10 years, 2 months ago

Arden: The world of Jason Cosmo. Created by The Gods. Arden is believed to be a round, flat, altogether disk-shaped world, rather like a pancake. It is not to be confused with other magical worlds of similar shape. Some sages believe The Gods considered creating a globe-shaped world but abandoned the idea because they didn't want to deal with the inevitable problem of producing accurate two-dimensional maps of a three-dimensional object.

Priests, naturalists and navigators agree that the World of Arden is in form a vast stationary disk some twelve hundreds of leagues in diameter, slightly convex in shape such that the Edge of the World rests at a lower plane than the Center of the World, the whole presenting an appearance not unlike a shallow saucer inverted. Arden is said to float in the infinite Void of Space.

Fixed above land and sea is the Firmament, called by some the Dome of the Sky or the Heavens and by others What Keeps All the Air In. The Firmament is wrought of a substance unknown, asserted by various authorities to be a crystal or glass of unsurpassed fineness, a polished blue metal, bands of invisible energy or, to adherents of the Air Is Just There theory, nothing at all.

Traversing the Firmament on fixed paths at set intervals are the two great heavenly bodies, to wit, the Sun and the Moon, called also the Disk of Rae and the Disk of Lune. Whether they are in true form celestial chariots or ships or lamps or pure projections of divine will, it is by the Sun and Moon that the world is lit, that Day is made separate from Night, and that the passage of Time is marked and kept.

Arden is believed by some sages to be just under 5000 years old. Others say it may be older, given that no one was marking time during the first two Ages of the world. See: Ages of Arden

Arden was meant to be called Garden, as The Gods created the world to be their garden, but the Nameless God flubbed his bit in the Naming Ritual and Named it Arden instead.
