Dark Magic Society

Page history last edited by Dan McGirt 4 years, 11 months ago

Dark Magic Society: An order of evil wizards dedicated to perfecting the blackest arts of the darkest magic, taking over the world, restoring the Empire of Fear, raising taxes, and other vile objectives. Typically ruled by an Overmaster and Ruling Conclave of its most powerful members. Arch-foes of the League of Benevolent Magic.

Membership Benefits

Dues-paying members receive access to the Society's extensive library of forbidden texts and magical lore previously maintained at Fortress Marn, a complimentary subscription to Dark Magic Today, and numerous other benefits. Members have the opportunity to burn, loot, pillage, terrorize, corrupt, and subjugate hapless victims.

Arcane master members are eligible for a complimentary staff of lackeys, henchmen, goons, minions, and slaves; an unlimited pass to the exclusive Carnality Club, and a handsome membership certificate on human skin, signed by the Overmaster, and suitable for framing. Occasionally there are other incentives to join, such as a magic ring of choice, a toaster oven, or not being murdered on the spot. Dues are payable monthly.

History

The Dark Magic Society is believed have been formed in 66 AH by a small group of evil sorcerers, witches, warlocks and other magi who survived the downfall of the Empire of Fear and believed that by working together they could someday restore the Empire and its former glory. This restored Evil empire would be ruled by evil wizards, not demons.

In the early centuries of the Age of Hope, the Society and their League foes often commanded great resources, fielding armies, controlling kings, starting wars and toppling thrones almost at will. By mid-age, both organizations began to operate more subtly, wielding influence behind the scenes. The Society, in particular, tended toward increasingly elaborate and complicated evil plots, often preferring to corrupt and undermine realms from within rather than seeking the open overthrow of their foes. The League spent much of its focus and energy on countering and exposing these plots, most typically being on the defensive. The two organizations remained locked in perpetual stalemate for centuries, with neither side holding the upper hand for very long.

Overmaster Erimandras

With the ascension of Overmaster Erimandras in the late 980s, the Society launched a newly aggressive offensive, seeking to turn or eliminate as many League wizards as possible and recruit or eliminate all non-affiliated wizards, thus achieving a monopoly on the use of magic. The Society's assassins succeeded in killing all but a few members of the League High Council by 990.

At the same time, Erimandras constructed the Mirror of Asmodraxas to establish contact with the exiled Archdemon, who directed him to locate Jason Cosmo and through him, the Superwand that could free Asmodraxas. To accomplish this, the Society posted a ten million carat reward for Cosmo's capture and spread rumors to encourage as many people as possible to seek him. Erimandras learned, either from Asmodraxas or by other means, that Cosmo was descended from the Line of Champions, long believed extinct, and thus posed a threat to the Society's goals by his very existence.

Funding Sources

Evil plots are expensive. The Society funds its operations with income derived from slavery, piracy, banditry, and other criminal activities. The Society also controls the Demon Mines of Denzark, which produce blackheart gold. This accursed gold corrupts the hearts of men and thus proves useful in bribing or otherwise corrupting those the Society would influence. The Society maintains a treasury at the Thrice-Cursed Tower and a separate horde in the Caverns of Doleful Doom. They also maintain accounts in the Bank of Caratha and other legitimate banks held through various pawns, minions, and shell companies.

Relationship with the Demon Lords

Many Society wizards are accomplished demonists who make bargains and form alliances with various Demon Lords. The Society has a whole has made treaties and agreements with certain Demon Lords. Even so, the Society as such is not a willing instrument of the Demon Lords and sometime acts at cross purposes to individual Hellmasters or to the Demon Lords collectively.

Although the Society has often allied with one or more of the Demon Lords in the pursuit of power, its members do not (with a few notable exceptions) see themselves as serving the Demon Lords. Rather, the Society views the Lords Below as useful allies or tools, to be ultimately betrayed and discarded when no longer convenient. In fairness, the Demon Lords feel the same way about the Society.

In 990 AH, various Demon Lords, including Ouga-Oyg, became aware that Erimandras was in communication with Asmodraxas and sought to free him. The Demon Lords sought to thwart this effort by killing Jason Cosmo.
