Eleven Kingdoms: Collective name for the major nations of the unnamed northern continent of the world of Arden. Traditional, and horribly inaccurate, since not all of the Eleven Kingdoms are, in fact, kingdoms. Also, there are more than eleven sovereign realms in the region. Most are not counted as part of the Eleven Kingdoms despite being mingled in their midst. The Grand Duchy of Goldara being one example. The Lost Kingdom of Terrengia is another. Still, the name sticks. Because the Not-Exactly-Eleven Not-Quite-All-Kingdoms lacks a certain cachet.
That said, there is some justification for giving the eleven realms known as the Eleven Kingdoms a certain precedence over their neighbors. Each of the Eleven Kingdoms was founded (or is reputed to have been founded) by either the Mighty Champion or one of his companions, whereas the other realms in the region were not. Sometimes it pays to be first.
During the Age of Despair, the territory that would become the Eleven Kingdoms was under the rule of the Empire of Fear. The Eleven Kingdoms were founded after the downfall of the Evil Empire, in the early years of the Age of Hope.
