Eleven Kingdoms: Traditional collective name for the major nations of the unnamed northern continent of the world of Arden. Traditional, and horribly inaccurate, as not all of the Eleven Kingdoms are, in fact, kingdoms. Also, there are more than eleven sovereign states in the region, some defunct, but none counted as part of the Eleven Kingdoms despite being mingled in their midst. The Grand Duchy of Goldara is one example. The Lost Kingdom of Terrengia is another.

Still, the name sticks. Because the Not-Exactly-Eleven Not-Quite-All-Kingdoms lacks a certain cachet.

During the Age of Despair, the territory that would become the Eleven Kingdoms was under the rule of the Empire of Fear. The Eleven Kingdoms were founded after the downfall of the Empire.
