Raelna: One of the Eleven Kingdoms.

RAELNA

Capital: Rae City

Government: Monarchy

Ruler: Queen Raella Shurbenholt

Population:

Non-Human:

Resources: Foodstuffs, textiles

Currency: Mark (gold), decimal currency.

Slavery: No

Fun Facts

  • Know as the Sun Kingdom, Raelna was founded by the demi-god Blaze Shurben, son of the Goddess Rae.
  • Raelna is a blessed land, which inhibits the power of most, though not all, demons within its borders.
  • Raelna fights an Annual War with Brythalia.

People

Raelnans are in general hard-working, prosperous, happy and generous people. Disease is rare in Raelna, as are crop failures, droughts and other natural disasters, which has contributed to a stereotype of being upbeat, optimistic, and can-do people. Non-Raelnans often consider Raelnans lucky, "Lucky as the sun" as the saying goes. Most Raelnans are deeply tanned -- or sun-kissed, as they put it -- and almost never suffer sunburn no matter how long they stay out.

Raelnans tend to be farmers, herders, craftsmen, artisans.

Geography

Raelna has a long northern border with Brythalia to the north. This border is marked with stone posts placed every fifty yards during the reign of Raemark the Surveyor. The surreptitious moving of these posts back and forth by Raelnans and Brythalians has resulted in a highly irregular, uneven, and ever shifting border on the ground, regardless of what maps show. This activity often provides a pretext for the Annual War.

The Brythalian border is heavily patrolled on both sides, not only due to post-moving, but due to the increasing number of runaway slaves and serfs from Brythalia who seek asylum and freedom in Raelna.

Climate

Sunny. Always sunny.

Economy

Advanced technomagic manufacture and alchemical production. Enchanted textiles. Flying carpets.

Agriculture - fruits, vegetables, grains, flowers, cattle, poultry

Nobility

The crown grants all titles of nobility, which may be either heritable or for life. Heritable titles must be reconfirmed by the crown before the legal heir to the title can assume it. This is typically little more than a ceremonial formality, completed by the heir doing homage.

Raelnan titles of nobility in order of precedence are duke, margrave, count, viscount, baron. The four senior orders of nobility comprise the House of Nobles. Barons holding their fiefs directly of the crown may also sit in the Council, but most barons are vassals of higher ranking nobles and do not sit in council by right.

Diplomacy

From the 800s, Raelna generally enjoyed close relations, trade, and even military alliance with Caratha. One issue of contention from the reign of Queen Raella was the status of fugitive slaves from Caratha who entered Raelna. By the queen's decree, such individuals were considered free and discharged from any status of servitude and were granted immeidate asylum. This caused tensions in an otherwise mostly amicable relationship with Caratha.

History

At the start of the Age of Hope, soon after the fall of the Empire of Fear, Goddess Rae transformed what was then a wasteland into a beautiful and bountiful kingdom, which she gave to her son, Blaze Shurben, and his followers, as a homeland. Blaze founded Rae City in honor of his mother and established a kingdom devoted to justice, mercy, goodness, and fun in the sun. The Goddess Rae blessed her son's realm with fair weather and with protection from demonic influence. While demons can enter Raelna, the opening and maintaining of a hellpit, hellcloud, or other portal to the Assorted Hells is difficult, at least without the direct efforts of one of the stronger Demon Lords or the use of an artifact such as the Horn of Hockessin.

In 534 King Raeford the Moose was murdered by rebellious nobles during the parade kicking off the Partially Hydrogenated Sunflower Oil Festival.

King Raegon formed a pact with King Lanthanide of Orphalia for their heirs Princess Raella and Prince Halogen to wed, forming a joint dynasty that would rule both realms. This did not work out.

Queen Raella instituted a program of reforms such as granting land to the peasants in freehold, outlawing slavery, banning torture, ending imprisonment for debt, reducing taxes, reorganizing the army, and reforming the courts, currency, and other laws. Her reforms made her much loved by the common folk, though unpopular with many nobles, most notably Thule Nethershawn, Duke of Umbra.

The Short War

In the spring of 990 AH, Raelna was simultaneously invaded by Brythalia and Orphalia. Both realms augmented their feudal armies with large numbers of mercenaries, possibly paid for by the Dark Magic Society. While the Orphalians crossed the Longwash and sacked several border towns, the Brythalians attacked in the east. At the same time, a demonic horde of flying marauders attacked Rae City, doing much damage to the capital before the Goddess Rae intervened to destroy the demons. The capture of King Halogen by Raelnan forces led to an immediate true and withdrawal by Orphalia. With that threat neutralized, the full weight of Raelna's military turned on Brythalia, expelling King Rubric's forces and seizing a significant swath of territory along the disputed border, moving the boundary markers as much as a full league in Raelna's favor.

Royal Wedding

Queen Raella received special dispensation from Goddess Rae to marry Mercury Boltblaster, all laws or customs to the contrary notwithstanding. The wedding was scheduled for High Summer Day, 990.

Divisions

Dukedoms:  The kings prefer to keep dukes few in number. There is but one dukedom in each quarter of the realm.

Counties: Counties are more numerous and are the standard feudal unit, large enough for advantages of administration, not so large that any one count can threaten the crown.

Baronies: Baron is an older title. Many of the old baronies have been subsumed into or elevated to become counties, but a few remain in their own right or as vassals to dukes and counts
