Rae

Page history last edited by Dan McGirt 10 years ago

Rae: Goddess of the Sun. Patron goddess of the Kingdom of Raelna, which was founded by her mortal son, Blaze Shurben. Rae is the divine ancestor of the royal House of Shurbenholt, the ruling family of Raelna. Like many of The Gods, Rae sometimes neglects to closely follow events in the mortal world for decades or centuries at a time.

In 990 AH Rae was summoned by her descendent, Queen Raella to save Rae City (named for the goddess) from an attack by demons. Rae intervened to protect her worshipers (possibly violating the Non-Intervention Pact). She also chose to become the patron goddess of the hero Jason Cosmo, making him her Champion, and resolved to become more engaged in the affairs of Arden. Rae was one of three gods who appeared to Cosmo at the Gates of Glory to offer him the choice of returning to life or being received into Paradise. Rae's promise that Cosmo could dwell in her palace forever and never have to leave her side confirmed for him his choice to live. She was pleased with Cosmo's heroics and the jealousy this aroused in her rival Lucinda Everfair. She bade Cosmo return to life when their interview was done.

Rae typically manifests as a fit and toned woman with long reddish-gold hair and coppery-brown skin. However, her hair color is prone to change to flame red or to actual flames, like a solar corona. Likewise her skin tone may vary to a more golden or bronze color, depending on her mood. Her typical voice is like a long summer day at the beach.

When roused to anger or armed for battle, Rae manifests a suit of golden armor and a flaming sword. She can assume gigantic stature at will and obliterate hundreds of demons at a stroke. Her voice resounds with the thunder of a thousand blast furnaces.

Rae is often found languidly sunning herself (literally) on or in the sun. She often wears designer sunglasses and drinks Diet Sola-Cola straight from the can. With a straw. From the vantage of her realm, Rae can see all the world of Arden. Her sight and power reach any place the beams of the sun shine and she can zoom in on any location.

Staff of Rae

Rae is assisted in her duties by several deputy goddesses, including:

Rae was previously assisted by Eliora Mornstar, Roria's predecessor as Goddess of Dawn, who was dismissed for misconduct.

She also keeps as a servitor and pet, Sparky the Sunhound.

She is also assisted by the Glimmer Girls, who are angels of sunlight.

Relations with The Gods

Rae is the brother of Lune, God of the Moon. The siblings coordinate to arrange eclipses.

Rae believes the people of Caratha pay too much attention to Amex and Surflord and neglect Rae's contributions to their city's prosperity and commerce.

Rae has an antagonistic relationship with Lucinda Everfair, Goddess of Love and Beauty, and believed Fair Lucinda's beauty is overrated, given her pale complexion.

Rae is the self-appointed patron goddess of Jason Cosmo, who is the Champion of Rae in addition to being Champion of The Gods.

Blessing of Rae

Rae can bestow various divine gifts and favors upon mortals whom she favors, such as her Champion. With a holy kiss, she granted Jason Cosmo the strength of ten men, possibly eleven whenever he was touched by the light of the sun. He also acquired a deep golden tan.

Church of Rae

The chief center of Rae worship in the Eleven Kingdoms is in the realm of Raelna, where she is honored above all of The Gods. The Holy Church of Rae oversees the rites, rituals and sacrifices in honor of the goddess.
