Sapphrina Corundum

Page history last edited by Dan McGirt 8 years, 4 months ago

Sapphrina CorundumSapphrina Corundum: (970 AH) Socialite, model, author, businesswoman. Daughter of Corun Corundum, the richest man in Zastria, and Jewella Corundum (aka Jewella of Tyr), reputed to be the most beautiful woman in Zastria. Descended through both parents from the pre-republican aristocracy of Zastria.

Early Life

After their mother died giving birth to them, Sapphrina and her twin sister Rubis Corundum were raised under the possessive eye of their father. The sisters received formal instruction in riding, singing, dancing, parlor games, making conversation, being pleasant, assaying gems and jewelry, flirtation, advanced flirtation, calligraphy, painting, interior decorating, gymnastics, etiquette, flower arranging, protocol, and social graces -- the standard education of upper class Zastrian girls. Sapphrina plays several instruments, and excels at the lyre. Secretly, they also mastered the principles of finance, real estate, and other aspects of business.

From late childhood, their lives were an endless round of parties, pageants, balls, feasts, and other events at which upper class Zastrian girls were expected to be witty, charming and decorative.

In 986, Sapphrina and Rubis were co-winners of the prestigious Miss Zastria pageant, the only tie in pageant history.

As an ambitious member of the Zastrian Senate, Corun Corundum viewed his daughters as valuable assets whose arranged marriages would help cement valuable political alliances. Finding their would-be mates exceptionally odious, Rubis and Sapphrina refused to marry the husbands chosen for them by their father, who ordered them publicly flogged for disobedience. The twins escaped and fled to Caratha, having previously transferred significant sums of gold (saved from their allowances and skimmed from their father's accounts) to the Bank of Caratha to fund their escape. Their refusals to marry as directed upset a delicate balance of power in Zastria, starting a brief civil war.

Life in Caratha

In Caratha the sisters secured fortune and fame as leading celebutantes. They authored a bestselling account of their adventures, Naughty Nymphs, and soon rose to the top of the fabled Scene, co-reigning as Queen of the Scene.

They also did community theater. Sapphrina is fair at mimicry and impressions.

Their father occasionally sent agents to Caratha to abduct the sisters and return them to Zastria. Sapphrina and Rubis frustrated these attempts through bribery and other means of dissuasion.

The twins own a penthouse condominium in a building on Galleon Square.

The sisters frequently attended WGF gladiating bouts and held season tickets. Sapphrina largely ignored the actual fights, believing "the real show is in the stands." She became a close of observer of the elite gladiating patrons who gathered in the MagiCom Stadium's exclusive sky boxes, and could divine subtle shifts of political, financial, and personal dynamics in Caratha based on who sat with whom.

Abduction and Slavery

In 989 A.H. Sapphrina was abducted in Caratha, along with Rubis, at the instigation of their Scene rival Aurora Nightdew. After being served drugged wine at a party, they were confronted by Nightdew, who gloated over their fates. The sisters were transported to Brythalia, where they were sold into slavery at a private auction in Rumular at a price of forty silver brythals for the pair of them.

Their new owner was Palish Birksnore, Lord Governor of Offal, a small city in western Darnk. The sisters were rescued a week after their arrival in Offal by the hero Jason Cosmo and accompanied him and the wizard Mercury Boltblaster to Rae City. There Sapphrina and Rubis were presented at court and menaced by winger marauders. Sapphrina was briefly infected by a possessor demon and injured in the resulting fight with Jason Cosmo. Following her recovery, the twins returned to Caratha.
